CASA & CASA IN ACTION SYNOPSIS:

CASA’s mission is to create a more just society by building power and improving the quality of life in working class Black, Latino/a/e, Afro-descendant, Indigenous, and Immigrant communities. Rooted in the collective power of our community, our inclusive, permanent, member-led movement radically transforms communities and systems to ensure the needs, dreams, and aspirations of members are fully met as we strive for justice and full liberation at home and in solidarity with others across the world. CASA has a sister organization, CASA in Action, a separate, but related, nonprofit organization that is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. Although CASA and CASA in Action share a common goal of supporting immigrants and low-income people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Georgia, they are separate organizations with independent Boards of Directors. A set of employees at the two organizations, including the person filling this position, shares their time between the two organizations. This has no effect on salary or benefits.

DEPARTMENT SYNOPSIS:

The Community Organizing Department identifies trains, mobilizes community members to create long-term improvements in their neighborhoods, jobs, and lives through collective direct action, and voter education and mobilization.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Organizer III is a senior-level organizing position at CASA. This role requires a minimum of one year of experience as a Community Organizer II demonstrating a successful history of sustaining two or more geographically designated member activist committees while continually exceeding membership recruitment goals. The Community Organizer III excels in fostering grassroots leadership through advanced community outreach skills and relational techniques, effectively leading geo-activists from their respective committees to break monthly turnout goals by taking action in local, state, and national campaigns.

The Community Organizer III is adept at designing and executing impactful community-led campaigns, as well as recruiting, developing, and sustaining member leaders to grow a base of followers who take action. They coordinate leadership development efforts and have consistently surpassed their monthly organizing goals. Recognized as a collaborative team player, the Community Organizer III demonstrates strong skills in facilitation, conflict resolution, de-escalation, problem-solving, and mentorship, all aimed at building collective people power and encouraging growth and effectiveness throughout all regional, state, and national organizing teams.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the standardization and implementation of leadership development trainings, interdepartmental community crisis response efforts, and team Blitz opportunities
  • Maintain two sustained committees and one emerging committee
  • Drives campaigns by planning, coordinating and implementing direct actions with minimal or no supervision
  • Draft strategic campaign plans
  • Perform research and power analysis to inform campaign strategy
  • Coordinate volunteers in the field
  • Represent CASA at various coalitions and meetings and serve as a point person for the organization on joint campaigns with partners
  • One-on-One grassroots outreach in the field
  • Identify and develop local leaders to get involved in organizing campaigns through in-depth one-on-ones, and provide ongoing leadership development training and opportunities in conjunction with Lead Organizer
  • Organize and maintain local committees and hold regular meetings
  • Ensure active involvement of members in state and national campaigns through regular mobilization and other means
  • Facilitate organizational meetings, events, and training participation
  • Represent and facilitate leaders in representing CASA when necessary before the media, legislative bodies and legislators, community meetings, coalitions, and funders
  • Interpret for community members when necessary to facilitate their involvement in the campaign.
  • Actively participate in internal staff meetings
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of all required administrative tasks, including data entry, grant reporting, financial reconciliation and other related work.
  • Participation in CASA actions, mobilizations and events as needed and required
  • Build power through voter registration and education campaigns, ally development, and participation in coalitions or networks as assigned
  • Performing database entry and writing timely, regular reports
  • Support the development and expansion of the organization
  • Meet deadlines established by supervisor and in Department and individual work plan
  • Provide quality member service, interactions and responses to all members, partner organizations, vendors, visitors, callers and any other individual or organization you may encounter in your role with CASA
  • Understand and promote CASA membership and services
  • Maintain a positive attitude
  • Transport members in CASA van or personal vehicle when required
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • Prior experience as a community organizer
  • Valid US Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bilingual (either Spanish/English or French/English) including both spoken and written proficiency
  • Demonstrated commitment to Social Justice
  • Embrace progressive values and willing to support other progressive issues
  • Comfortable driving passengers in a van and/or driving community members in personal vehicle
  • Highly trustworthy and demonstrate a high level of leadership and a track record of exercising good judgment
  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with their supervisor
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • All full time and part time permanent positions working twenty (20) hours or more per week.
